Bronchogen: What the Search Results Are Actually About

Bronchogen is a synthetic peptide of four amino acids, Ala-Asp-Glu-Leu, from the Russian tradition of short "peptide bioregulators" that also produced epithalon. If you are searching the name, the most useful thing to know first is that most of what comes back is not about it.

That is not a figure of speech. Search the name in the two places that matter, and both return results dominated by something else.

The literature search returns the wrong disease

PubMed returns about twelve records for the term. Read the titles and the great majority concern bronchogenic cysts and bronchogenic carcinoma: a neonatal cyst diagnosed by ultrasound in 1989, a laparoscopic extirpation in 2006, a case of carcinoma in 1988. These are unrelated conditions that share a word stem with the peptide's name, and a search engine cannot tell the difference.

Strip those out and the literature on the actual compound is roughly three papers:

  • A 2011 study of the peptide's effect on DNA thermostability, in Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine (PMID 21240358). This is also the paper that states the sequence.
  • A 2015 study of bronchial epithelium in rats with induced obstructive lung pathology, same journal (PMID 26468022).
  • A 2017 Russian-language paper on anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects in the same rat model (PMID 30199201).

Rats, cells and a thermostability assay. No human study appears in that set.

The trial registry returns a different product

ClinicalTrials.gov returns exactly one record for the name. It is NCT00746759, "Airway Epithelium Gene Expression in the Diagnosis of Lung Cancer: AEGIS IDE", sponsored by Allegro Diagnostics.

Open it and the mismatch is immediate. It is an observational study, not an interventional one. Its listed intervention is a diagnostic device, explicitly marked as not used as an intervention. Its purpose is to find gene expression patterns in the airways of smokers that flag lung cancer earlier. Allegro Diagnostics used the name BronchoGen for a diagnostic test, and the registry search simply matches the string.

So the honest statement is that there are zero registered human trials of the Bronchogen peptide, and the one result that looks like a trial is a cancer diagnostic with a similar name.

What that leaves

A four-residue peptide with a published sequence, three papers in rats and cells, no human trial, no approval from any regulator, and no label anywhere. Sold as a research chemical.

That is a thinner record than most pages on this compound imply, and the reason the record looks thicker than it is comes down to two search artefacts rather than two bodies of evidence.

How to check this yourself

Search PubMed for the name and read the titles rather than the count. Then open the single registry record and read two fields: the study type and the lead sponsor. Observational plus a diagnostics company is not a trial of a peptide, whatever the search result implied. Those two fields answer more questions about this compound than any summary of it will.
